Discover the Key Risk Factors for Alcoholic Neuropathy
Our calculator uses a research-based model that weighs lifetime alcohol exposure, withdrawal history, and additional conditions like poor nutrition, diabetes, and liver disease. How This Formula Was Developed
Our updated model is based on evidence from scientific reviews and clinical studies. The total lifetime consumption of alcohol is the strongest predictor of neuropathy risk, so we calculate a lifetime exposure score as (drinks per day × years) divided by 5. We then add fixed points for clinical severity markers (withdrawal symptoms and an Alcohol Use Disorder diagnosis) and weight additional risk factors—such as poor nutrition, diabetes, liver disease, family history, and female gender—according to research findings that show these conditions amplify nerve damage.
This approach, while still heuristic, aligns well with current research and provides a more nuanced estimate of your risk for developing alcoholic neuropathy.
